For analysis of brain/spinal cord sections.

Other Techniques

A rotating cylinder that allows measurement of the coordination of rats and mice.

A clean location for surgical procedures performed with fluid of air anesthesia with/without a dissecting microscope.

Reinforcement Tests

Radiant Heat paw Withdrawal

This test allows a determination of the sensitivity to thermal heat generated by a light source under the glass floor.

Tail Withdrawal

Used as a means to measure thermal sensitivity in the tail with hot water.

von Frey

The standard mechanical sensitivity test in which fibers of varying thickness are applied to the plantar surface of the hind paw.

Hot Plate

A classical test in which rodents are placed on a hot plate and removed at the first sign of discomfort.

Enzyme-linked Immunosorbant Assay (ELISA)

Used to analyze compounds in the blood or spinal fluid of our animals or human subjects.

Western Blot

Used to identify specific proteins in tissue.

Nociceptive Tests

All nociceptive tests are designed to allow the animal to terminate the tests at any time and cause no damage. All tests are performed by experienced personnel trained to identify discomfort.

In the IMPACT Lab we routinely use a number of the following techniques:

Molecular Techniques

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

Primarily used as a technique to identify the genotypes of knockout mice and their offspring

Facial Expression

Animals are recorded in HD and their facial expressions are collected and scored as a measure of spontaneous pain.

Operant Self-Administration

Animals are permitted to press a lever for either intravenous drug infusion of food/sucrose reinforcement.

Conditioned Place Preference (CPP)

Used to measure the reinforcing (or aversive) value of a drug or stimulus paired with a specific floor texture.

Immune Modulation of Pain and Addiction for Comprehensive Therapeutics
